RE: [Shefa] Mi'Sheberach on Shabbat??

Rabbi Konigsburg:

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. As I get ready for Shabbat, I have reread your last line.
Now, if you want to have a discussion about what it means theologically to ask God for healing, that is a whole different question.

It is a good question. We ask for things all the time. When we ask for others we appear selfless, are we truly asking so that we do not feel pained by others’ illnesses? It’s like asking for one’s mother-in-law to live and be healthy so she doesn’t have to move in with you.

From a truly theological perspective, how does one ask for God to do a physical thing? I am always uncomfortable asking God for favors. My prayers always seem to be apologies and prayers for my failures, not for some actual recompense that is tangible.

Something for me to think about this Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom
Michael
